The composer who drew on Afro-American music to write some of his great masterpieces, was rewarved many times by jazz players who rethought, expanded and trasformed those harmonic and rhythmic elements that are the center of the big project "American Music" that runs through the entire Bernstein oeuvre.
Gabriele Coen's project, that goes beyond the reinterpretation of West Side Story, shows more than one touch of originality for choice of musicians, from such different musical origins, for instrumentation, between classical music and jazz and for the careful balance of improvisation within the frame of the composition, which ultimately hold up the structure of Bernstein's music"
